WASHINGTON, Sept. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Representatives from three universities are in the Capitol today to be honored for developing and implementing programs on their campuses throughout the year to effectively prevent overconsumption of alcoholic beverages and underage drinking.
Bradley University, Peoria, Ill.; the University of Missouri-Columbia; and Regis University, Denver, Colo., received awards and checks from Dr. Edward Hammond, chairman of the Inter-Association Task Force on Alcohol and Other Substance Abuse Issues (IATF), board chairman of The BACCHUS Network and president of Fort Hays State University, for having the highest scores in the national competition in conjunction with National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week (NCAAW). Coors Brewing Company sponsored the awards on behalf of the IATF.
Representatives from the universities are also meeting today with their U.S. senators and representatives to brief them on how their programs are addressing alcohol abuse on campus.
Dr. Hammond said, "I am very pleased to recognize these three institutions for their outstanding programming that is helping solve the problems of underage drinking and overconsumption. Their sustained efforts are making a difference. On behalf of the higher education community, I also want to thank Coors Brewing Company for working with us and recognizing these success stories."
Frits van Paasschen, president and chief executive officer of Coors Brewing Company, said, "Coors is proud to sponsor the National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week Awards, and we are very pleased to honor the three winning universities for their outstanding alcohol education programming. They are among the best nationwide whose efforts are making a real contribution toward reducing underage and reckless drinking."
The purpose of NCAAW is to help students make responsible, legal decisions and to reduce the incidence of alcohol-related problems on college campuses and in college communities. The three universities received the most points in the competition and were judged for use of evidenced-based approaches in their prevention efforts as well as comprehensive, year-round alcohol education programming, collaboration and support for NCAAW.
