John Jay College to Give Annual Journalism Award for Excellence in Criminal Justice Reporting
First Will Be Awarded in December at Harry F. Guggenheim Symposium on Crime in America
NEW YORK, Sept. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The John Jay College of Criminal Justice, part of The City University of New York, has announced the establishment of an annual print journalism award for Excellence in Criminal Justice Reporting designed to encourage and recognize outstanding journalistic efforts that enhance the public's understanding of issues related to crime in America.
The deadline for entries is October 15th and the first award will be presented at a symposium on Crime in America, to be held at the college December 15th and 16th of this year.
The symposium is being underwritten by a grant from the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation.
The John Jay Award will be given for work that advances the public's understanding of crime in America and comes with a $2,000 prize. Stories or series related to police issues, corrections, prisoner reentry, courts or some other aspect of the criminal justice system are eligible. A panel of distinguished journalists will judge entries.
Entries must be submitted no later than October 15, 2005, and include five copies no larger than 11x17 inches. They may be accompanied by a one page cover letter outlining the difficulties faced during the reporting of the piece or series. The December symposium is the first in a series of activities undertaken by the Institute on Crime and Journalism that will be housed at John Jay College and sponsored by the college in partnership with two other university- based organizations: the Institute for Justice and Journalism at the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Southern California; and Criminal Justice Journalists, University of Pennsylvania.
The symposium will draw together academicians, journalists from across the country, law enforcement and criminal justice officials, students and members of the general public. It will take place during two days, with six sessions covering such topics as understanding crime statistics, national crime trends, and resources for journalists.
